Who needs James Franco? Hasn’t Franco-fatigue permeated most of society by now? And Freida Pinto? Her performance in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was like a vapor—was it really even there? Yeah, we lost “Rise” director Rupert Wyatt too. But I believe we are going to survive all of those omissions from the 2011 film—especially considering that Matt Reeves is helming “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”, due to arrive in U.S. theaters on July the 11th. And Andy Serkis remains as Caesar—so it’s all good! Plus, with a human cast that includes Gary Oldman and Keri Russell, and an ape one that sports Judy Greer as “Cornelia”(dig those classic “Apes” movies homages!), we should all be chomping at the bit. And mostly for Mr. Reeves. Hey, I really enjoyed “Rise” 3 years ago, but Reeves scored a knockout in 2008 with the spectacular “Cloverfield”. Plus, his 2010 “Let Me In”, an American remake of Sweden’s 2008 “Let the Right One In”, very nearly matches the quality of the original. Reeves is the real deal, folks. And I’m getting the impression from the trailers that “Dawn” is going to be really sweet! So, this coming solstice, remember to go APE, not human!
Summer Monkeyshines, with “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”!
