It did it. With box office receipts lagging behind last summer’s by around twenty percent(ironically, in my eyes, because many of 2014’s blockbusters have been quite good!), “Guardians of the Galaxy” swooped in and grossed 94 million dollars in its opening weekend—-smashing the previous August record. In fact, it was about 20 million bucks ahead of most analysts’ predictions…and 25 more than previous August champion, “The Bourne Ultimatum” from 2007. Is it enough to completely save the summer? Maybe not…but it has certainly reversed the momentum. Disney Studios marketed this superhero release perfectly, and you could sense in the air that this one was going to open BIG. So, what appeared to be a big gamble for Marvel at the beginning of the season, now appears to be promotional genius. An obscure comic book creation with quirky characters, and just enough of a smattering of recognizable names, “Guardians of the Galaxy” was boosted by positive reactions from the nation’s critics too. And with Spider-Man, Godzilla, and Transformers being held up as the familiar cash cows early on, it’s amazing to think that it took a talking raccoon, a walking tree, and a green-skinned beauty to rescue this solstice! Director James Gunn…welcome to the big time!
“Guardians of the Galaxy” arrives to save the summer!
