Can you sympathize with my dilemma here? I’ve spent a good deal of time knocking Tom Cruise on this blog, chronicling his craziness–especially in regards to the recent release of the documentary, “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief”. Tom C’s name is practically synonymous now, with the L. Ron Hubbard religion. But dammit, if I’m not still all jazzed up for “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”…the fifth movie in the series dating back to 1996. I mean just watch the darn trailer! Do you realize that loony sonofabitch really had himself tied to the side of that freaking plane! Love him or hate him…that’s some kind of dedication. So, cuckoo bird though he may be–Cruise is also some kind of freakishly awesome big budget Hollywood action star. And more.
“Risky Business”, “Top Gun”, “Rain Man”, “Born on the Fourth of July”, “A Few Good Men”, “Interview with the Vampire”, “Jerry Maguire”, “Eyes Wide Shut”, “Minority Report”, “Collateral”, “War of the Worlds”…Scientology or not, that’s an incredible resume. It’s been some career, but there’s no denying that his star power has ebbed in the last decade. But 2011’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” was one of his biggest hits ever. Plus, last year’s “Edge of Tomorrow” just may have been the best film he’s ever done. I’m not kidding…it’s great. So, the Scientology thing is really a shame, because it tarnishes what has been an outstanding career. And with “Edge of Tomorrow” writer, and “Jack Reacher” writer/director, Christopher McQuarrie at the helm for “Mission 5″…I can’t help but get excited. “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” explodes onto North American multiplex screens on July 31st. Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, VingRhames, and Alec Baldwin co-star. As for Mr. Tom Cruise…crazy or not, here I come!
