BIG weekend for T.C., and I can’t help but be excited. I know, I know…he’s a Scientology nutcase. But he somehow maintains his unexplainable charisma, even after all these years. 32 years tomorrow, to be exact, since he slid into the scene, in his underwear, in 1983’s “Risky Business”. There were a handful of films before that, of course, but August of ’83 was when the Cruise missile truly launched. That’s a damn impressive run.
Mr. Cruise has survived multiple marriages, couch jumping, Brooke Shields-bashing, sexuality rumors, “Rock of Ages”, and yes, his religious affiliation. He’s a survivor, and a particular kind of bad-ass. Plus, still an obvious, unmistakable, international movie star, after an explosive first weekend for “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”. It’s the latest in this quintet of a franchise (so far), and it’s even managed to become the best reviewed of the bunch, as well.
“Rogue Nation” raked in almost 56 million dollars domestically on its opening weekend, and managed to grab an additional 65 million internationally. It’s a great start, for a very good action blockbuster. Oh yes–I’ve seen it. In IMAX. And you can expect my review at some point this week. But, for now, a tip of the hat to the seemingly indestructible Tom Cruise. His “Edge of Tomorrow” from 2014, was my favorite of ALL his films…and he almost never fails to get my fanny in a theater seat.
