“Hamilton: An American Musical” to the rescue!

Who would’ve thought it would be nine months? To the day…that’s exactly how long my New York theater dearth has lasted. Longest barren period in over 30 years? Quite possibly. Hey, it was completely unplanned, totally unexpected…and happily about to end. And am I coming back with a bang, or what?! This weekend, I’ll be attending the HOTTEST show on Broadway, “Hamilton: An American Musical”. Tough ticket? You bet your ass! For more than double the ticket face price, I am sitting in the very last row of the Richard Rodgers Theatre! How HUGE is this production? Well, President Obama was certain to attend “Hamilton” on a recent visit to NYC. Who wants to bet that he had better seats than mine?

“Hamilton” debuted off-Broadway at the Public Theater in January of this year. It transitioned to Broadway with previews in July, and officially opened on August the 6th. With music, lyrics and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also stars as Alexander Hamilton), it’s already won the Outstanding Musical Award from the Outer Critics Circle, the Drama Desk, and the Lucille Lortel Awards ceremonies. Of course, Mr. Miranda has already been showered with trophies for last decade’s “In the Heights”, the show that brought him the Best Musical Tony Award, and a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. I smell a repeat of that tandem coming next year for “Hamilton”. It’s almost a miracle that I got in to this. I’m beyond excited–my review follows next week!
