Star Trek…Beyond 50

It’s the 50th anniversary, since the television series first premiered in 1966, and it seems like they’re pulling out all the stops for the 13th film in the movie part of that universe. Plus, how many spin-off shows have been broadcast? Four? Five? It’s easy to lose count. Plus, there’s another one on the way! Also, this upcoming blockbuster has just taken on a whole new level of gravitas, hasn’t it? R.I.P. Anton Yelchin. The poor kid left us way too soon, after a freakish car accident just days ago. “Star Trek Beyond” will mark his third time portraying Pavel Chekov. He was only 27 years old.

Now, can “The Fast and the Furious” franchise director Justin Lin pump some life into this ancient series? It certainly needs the boost, as far as I’m concerned. 2009’s “Star Trek” reboot from director J.J. Abrams was a step in the right direction. But his 2013 “Star Trek Into Darkness” follow-up left a sour taste in my mouth, with its “Indiana Jones”-style set pieces, and lily-white Khan Noonien Singh (aka, Benedict Cumberbatch). However, I’m pulling for this installment…I really am. I grew up with “Star Trek”. Captain Kirk is legendary…and Chris Pine makes a fine one. Plus, there’s Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Lt. Uhura, and Simon Pegg as Scotty. Beyond the half century…make it so! “Star Trek Beyond” arrives in July.
